SoulArt Gallery, curated by artist and sculptor Ryan T. Schmidt, features a distinguished roster including renowned Zimbabwean stone sculptor Gedion Nyanhongo, Idaho-born expressive painter Matthew Sievers, Glass Artist Artprize Winner Recipient Mark Lewanski, International Painter from Barbados William Attaway, Metal Sculptor Jeff Waddle, the late French Artist JeanFo, and Ryan T. Schmidt. The collection spans metal and stone sculpture, glass, and painting, thoughtfully selected for collectors, architects, designers, developers, museum patrons, and art enthusiasts.
Following an extensive 2024 renovation, SoulArt entered a new chapter as a gathering place for art, design, and creative collaboration, welcoming the Michigan Residential Architects (MIRA) and Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce for its special reopening. The gallery also hosts exclusive invitation-only events featuring contemporary art, music, fine food and wine, signature cocktails, and philanthropic partnerships.
Located at the iconic Bridgewater Place building, 333 Bridge Street NW Grand Rapids, Michigan, the collection can be viewed through the building’s glass doors from the lobby during regular business hours. Mark Lewanski
Mark Lewanski’s masterpiece “Arras” was the 2025 Artprize winner in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He works from his downtown studio in Portland/Lansing, Michigan and a home gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona.
He has perfected the quasi-impossible art of weaving glass strips into massive, intricate, fluid-like surfaces that turned into unique pieces of Fine Art. Mark has become a creative vanguard in the field, his trademark glass boxes and mosaic mirrors bought and appreciated by thousands of art lovers worldwide.
William Attaway
Attaway is from Barbados and has been producing Fine Art in Venice Beach, California since 1979.
He has been working with ceramics, painting and sculptures. Each brushstroke and color gesture in his paintings are steeped in abundance, similar to the Abstract Expressionists where the size of each paint stroke or drip was equal to oneself.
Attaway categorizes a full, sumptuous approach to his figures embracing an artist's life and having no fear.
Gedion Nyanhongo
Born in Zimbabwe, Gedion Nyanhongo was introduced to stone carving by his father, Claud Nyanhongo, an original member of the Shona Stone Sculpture Movement that began in the late 1950s. This early influence instilled in Gedion a deep respect for craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and storytelling.
After apprenticing with internationally acclaimed sculptor Joseph Ndandarika, Gedion began his solo career in 1988. Since then, his work has been exhibited internationally throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and the United States.
Gedion works exclusively with indigenous stones from Zimbabwe, including serpentine, springstone, opal, lepidolite, and verdite. Each sculpture is carved and polished entirely by hand using traditional methods, bridging generations while bringing the rich stories and cultural spirit of the Shona tradition to audiences worldwide.
Today, Gedion maintains studios in Fostoria, Ohio, and Phoenix, Arizona, continuing to honor his heritage while advancing the Shona Sculpture Movement into the 21st century.
